Stone Soup is for Sharing
To celebrate our Thanksgiving season, our Acton Academy Cultural Specialists decided to encourage each learner in the school to disguise a turkey so it wouldn’t end up on someone’s dinner table for Thanksgiving. It was followed up by a school-wide Thanksgiving lunch - inspired by the story of Stone Soup.
As you can see from the picture of disguised turkeys, we have some very creative thinking going on. Â
Friday began the festivities with each learner bringing their favorite soup item to donate to our Stone Soup. Some items brought were carrots, potatoes, chicken, onions, spices, celery, corn, and even crackers to share. It heated over a low temperature for a few hours while we did our regular studies. Then, at lunch time, we read the story of Stone Soup, a European folk story in which hungry strangers convince the people of a town to each share a small amount of their food in order to make a meal that everyone enjoys. The moral of the story is that everyone benefits from contributing.
Finally, the soup was served to all learners.
They were delighted with the taste and some even came back for more.
